The Answer: How do THEY want to be different?

You’ve probably heard it a thousand times. “Hiring managers are looking for creative people.”  But we’re not talking about Picassos and Rembrandts, we’re talking about people who can think outside of their own box and meet those managers where they are. Sure, hiring managers are looking for the best candidate, but the question that they’re really asking is: “Which candidate is going to most be capable of helping me achieve my goal, fulfill my dream?” Whether this question is subconscious or conscious, that’s what they’re asking. It might be in a selfish sense–how can you help them personally? Or, ideally, it might be on a bigger picture–how can you fulfill the company’s vision?

When you’re at that interview, it’s essential to show them that YOU are the best way for them to fulfill that dream. But the only way to even get close to that is to KNOW that dream. So these ‘creative people’ hiring managers are looking for are not necessarily in the arts, but they understand who they are, what their story is, where their gaps are, and how you can fill those gaps. Thinking outside the box, thinking outside YOUR box–find the dreams THEY have AND the dreams they hadn’t even considered yet because they are too close to the situation–and show them how you can help build up those dreams to reality. Know how THEY want to be different, then demonstrate your ability to get them there.
