Do you have any of those lessons in your life that you know to be absolutely true? You support it with all your heart and you know that it is
exactly how you want to behave–
but there is no [blankin’] way to get it done?
Yeah, me, too. I have about 30 of them. Last week we touched on one: handling stress.Let’s explore a bit further this week.
When was the last time you unplugged?
I mean really unplugged–so much so that you might even get bored wondering what to do with yourself?
Those moments when you mindlessly reach for your smart-phone, check your email, read Facebook, or take on an angry bird…those moments can really add up.
I recently went with my family on a phenomenal Yellowstone vacation where, it turns out, we had no cell service OR wifi. This was for five and a half days! We were forced to disconnect from email, text, social media, and all electronic distractions, including work. I have to admit, at first, my wife and I panicked.
But by the end of the trip, can you guess how I felt?
It’s not rocket science to know that true rest is rejuvenating. And yet, unless we’re forced into it,
we can often find a way to sneak stress into our down time. “Oh, I’ll just check my email. Five Minutes, I swear!” And then, 75 mins later, it’s “I’m almost done, no really, I’m wrapping this up, just a few more minutes…”
I encourage you this week to find a time and place during the day to really turn off everything — even if it’s just for one hour or 30 minutes. Don’t work, don’t connect, don’t do anything except whatever you find truly restful. You will be shocked what begins to find its way in with all that open space in your heart, mind and creativity.
And, if you’d like, let me know how it goes! I’d love to hear from you.
