Last month I had a chance to speak with a fantastic group of career seekers at CRN: Career Resources Network where I posed a similar question to the idea I blogged about last week, only this time it went: How do prospective employers see themselves in your leadership? Think about it.

Just because you are career seeking, you are NO LESS A LEADER. In fact, one could argue that no other role in your life demands more leadership from you than that of a career seeker.  It’s the ultimate in self-leadership, and as it relates to others, it’s the toughest kind of leadership there is. You have all of the responsibility but none of the authority to make anyone do anything.  It is 100% leadership through influence.  The strength of your leadership will shine through your behavior, your attitude, your mannerisms and your reflection.

Hiring managers are choosing among a plethora of over-qualified, over-eager candidates.  So ask yourself, what does a prospective employer see in the reflection of your leadership?  When they look at you, do they see their companies capable of achieving the goals they seek?  Do they experience a sense of excitement and possibility that opens up horizons only achievable when they look at you? When they look at you, can they see the reflection of their success – not your success, but their success – a reflection that fails to shine back to them when they look at other candidates?

You know those psychic characters in movies that touch something and get a vision?  Great leaders are similar.  When we are around them we see things, feel things, believe things that we don’t experience around others.  What are the hiring managers (or your current managers if you are currently employed) seeing, thinking, feeling and believing when they look at you?
